Career Development for Students at Newham PRUs

Start have developed a set of Home Learning Activities to help students continue their career learning. This website offers structured  learning around Careers and Post 16 progression.

The activities are free to access and students don’t need to have used Start before - they can login with an existing account or quickly create one as they get started. The links below will take you to the activities and there is also a pack of downloadable resources such as a student guide to the activities.

Careers Interviews:
Year 11 students participate in a 1:1 Careers Guidance Interview to explore their career aspirations and progression pathways. A copy of the Careers Action Plan is sent home in the post so that students, parents and carers have a record of the Careers Interview and the agreed actions to be taken in preparation for leaving school.

Completion of Application Forms:
All students are supported to complete all their post 16 College, Apprenticeship and/or Traineeship application forms in school. Application forms are either completed online or in hardcopy version. All acknowledgement letters are posted to students at their home address as proof that the application has been received. All letters must be shared with staff so that we are aware of any conditional offers that are made.

Students are advised to apply to a variety of different colleges and/or training courses so that they can secure a conditional offer by the end of year 11. As colleges are currently closed due to the pandemic, interviews  are currently being conducted by phone and/or video call. Apprenticeship and training providers will inform students of their interview processes once students have been successful in securing an offer. School staff will support students to successfully prepare for any upcoming interviews in good time. Students must remember to inform staff of any upcoming interviews they have.

All college application form should be completed by the by the end of the Spring Term,  this is to ensure that students have the best possible chance of securing a place on a course of their choice. Apprenticeship and Traineeship applications are completed throughout year 11.
Career Development Agencies: The Boost Plus Programme & Our Newham Youth:
To ensure that all Year 11 students are able to make a smooth transition and remain in some form of Employment Education and/or Training (EET) in Year 12, Newham PRUs are working collaboratively with Prospects and Our Newham Youth to provide school leavers with targeted career development support once they leave school in the Summer Term.
