Subject Statement

New Directions students will be given the opportunity to gain a BTec Introductory Award in PE. The purpose of this qualification is to help students develop the transferable skills, attributes and behaviours needed for them to progress to further study and ultimately to employment. The qualification requires learners to complete routine, simple and directed tasks by applying their knowledge and skills. 

The Introductory Award is designed around practical skills and tasks, enabling students to show what they can do, rather than just what they know in theory. Students will work through one compulsory task, as well as one task from a choice of activities.

As they work through the tasks set, students will be able to set their own targets and assess their progress through the course. There is no written exam at the end of this course, as students will produce all the evidence required to show that they have met all the assessment objectives, which will then be internally assessed.

How Parents and Carers can Help

Keep your child connected with sport by encouraging them to watch a variety of sport on TV and online

Encourage your child to join sports teams outside of school

Talk about the current events in the sporting world

Encourage your child to read about any sport they may be interested in i.e. sports pages on social media, sports apps and websites, reading sports pages of newspapers

Promoting healthy eating

Encouraging daily exercise

Encouraging extra research into health and fitness

Promote watching health and fitness documentaries
